Ave. News (9-19-04)
Howdy Folks,
Jones Ave is preparing for the Show at Cullman Alabama on Sept 24th
w/ Spaceseed and Nik Turner. The evening is going to be alot of fun
w/ diverse acts such as Sigmond Snopek(Violent Femmes),Valles Brothers,Superheaven,Sublimintorand
many more.Bob Harvey the founding member of Jefferson Airplane and my
bandmate in San Francisco Blue. San francisco Blue was formed in 1995
when me and Bob collaborated on the writing of the song "One By
One". We met in Al Jubail Saudi Arabia and played music but didn't
write or record. We finally finished the first album "Idiots Vision"in
2001. Me and Bob have written 15 songs together. One recently called
Hurting For People co-written w/ Skip Spence of Moby Grape. Here is
the lyric and a story behind it.
Hurting For People
By Bob Harvey, Skip Spence, Brian Fowler

Dm/Hurting for people - C/got no time to wait
Dm/Hurting for people - Dm/got no Am/time to Dm-Am-Dm/hate
Dm/Don't tell me what love C/ought to be
It's Dm/just a Am/need to Dm-Am-Dm/communicate
C/Go find someone - and G/you will see
C/Go find someone - and G/learn to be
You'll find that love is just reaching out -Bar 3rdFret
While someone else is reaching in - You can make it through
C/Say what you want - I'll G/give it to you

C/Open your heart for G/it's the key
C/That will make you strong & G/set you free
You'll find that love is just reaching out
While someone else is reaching in - you can make it too
In August of 1965, Matthew Katz, the manager, took Jefferson Airplane
to Los Angeles to audition for several labels. He gut us rooms at the
Palms, a secluded lodge in the Hollywood hills. Skip Spence and I had
a room together. We spent that first night getting high and writing
a song called "Hurting For People". I wrote the lyrics in
my journal, and have hung on to them for 39 years, but the melody was
never recorded and was lost in the mists of time, so when I decided
to use it for the latest Skip Spence tribute album, I got together with
Brian Fowler and we put new music to the lyrics. the one part of Skip's
melody that I could remember was to the line, "love is just reaching
out while someone else is reaching in. It fit perfectly with the new
chord structure. This last weekend, Brian and I recorded "Hurting
For People" with an engineer named Melonie Emerson-Taft. She is
truly amazing. She got great sound out of all the instruments, including
my voice. I'll be proud to have on the new tribute album. Bob Harvey
& Brian Fowler
The tribute album is a limited edition and are sold out, We may re-release
it in some form later. If you havent picked up Idiots Vision or any
of the other SFB,Jones Ave. or Superczar cd's go to www.sfblue.co.uk
.
I have recieved some e-mails on when is Superczar going to make another
album. We just released "The Misadventures of Stanley Howard and
Pop Art this year 2004. Pop Art being the 3rd electronic album along
w/ 6 lives and Stress Signal. The new record is w/ new members J.W.
Culp and Hank Tart. Hank Tart will be at Cullman w/ Spaceseed and will
be playing w/ Jones Ave as well. Superczar plans to record a 5th album
in the future. At the moment everyone is really busy, J.W. is a college
professor and a gtr teacher as well.My schedule is chaotic as well.
The new cd has Ariana Arcu(Scorpions,Deep purple) on it and she is fantastic
on cello.I look fwd to writing and recording w/ gabe again. I have written
more songs w/ Gabe than anybody and he is simply brillant.
I will be spending alot of time in Bristol Virginia from this point
fwd. I went to the Bristol Rythym and Roots festival and it was 1st
class i got to seel leftover Salmon and Gillian Welch to name a few.
I have always love Roots Music. I was born in Kentucky and all of my
family plays music. My Uncle Jerry Fowler has a top notch band called
Iron Horse http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Ironhorse/
there is mp3's of his music and other suprises. Bristol is a interesting
place the big bang of Country music was there
http://www.loc.gov/bicentennial/propage/TN/tn_s_frist3.html
I got to jam w/ one of my old friends Bobby Love(Holston Mountain Boys)
and we played some songs we had written in Saudi Arabia together(Bobby
was in same Seabee Unit w/ Bob Harvey) at the festival and we had a
great time. Bobby is a awesome musician and he can sure keep you on
your toes. His son is a outstanding singer as well. We plan to record
a traditional bluegrass album there in Bristol. I will spending alot
of time there after the new year.
I was asked how Jones Ave. started? Here is my answer:
Jones AVe was formed in 1997 when I met John Joiner at a wedding reception
of a mutual friend, He brought a recorder and I had a mandolin. We got
to jamming and made some good music and became friends. John Joiner
left Jones AVe in 2003. His leaving was a spiritual blow to Jones Ave.John
played almost every show w/ SFB and Jones Ave until his departure. I
was working at a music store repairing and selling musical instruments
is where I met gabe. He looked like Frank Zappa but very thin. He started
talking about the Avalon ballroom and Psychedelia and albums and we
were friends. I invited him over to Jones Ave. for a Jam. And hence
forth spewed the origin of Jones Ave.The name Jones AVe. comes from
a 1900's house that John's mother and John lived in. It burned leaving
half the house uninhabitable, the acoustics were amazing in there, the
middle room was a burnt out hull pitch black w/ lights off and black
charred walls. Me and Gabe and John used to have incredible jams in
that old house, hand painted gargolyles and candles. The music started
there. It progressed until 1999 when Dr. David Wisdo Joined. David a
great songwriter and performer helped us get up on all 4's and get better.
In 2002 Josh Railey joined and made us solid w/ his great drumming.
We have had some great players in Jones Ave. Laszlo Stan on violin who
was the MVP of Folk Art Album. He appears w/ the macon Symphony Orchestra
and is from Trannslyvania. In Jones Ave. being the community it is,
you never know who will be there. We have added multi-instrumentalist
Dennis Beck to the Fold. Jones Ave. has been going for 7 years and has
been alot of fun. Currently Bob harvey is part of the live show as well.
Bob's 40+years in music adds alot to the sound of Jones Ave.
P.S. Come out to Cullman Alabama and see Nik Turner and Spaceseed and
Jones Ave.
Part #2---Jones Ave News 2004 \
Howdy here is part #2 of the update: I went to the Bristol Rythym and
Roots Festival in Bristol Virginia and Tennesee right on the border.
They had Gillian Welch,Leftover Salmon to name a few bands there. I
was standing about 10 feet from the stage(Actually behind the stage)
and man they really put on a good show. I have always loved Bluegrass
and Country music as well as Celtic. I began to play mandolin at age
11. I am from Louisville Kentucky the Bluegrass state I guess the Counterculture
made a mixture w/ my roots and made a wierdstyle.As a Roots artist w/
Gary Allen and Riversouth we opened up for Charlie Daniels,Billy Ray
Cyrus(10 thousand screaming women at his shows)for him that is,Aaron
Tippon and we had a nice run of it in the mid nineties 1992-1995. We
were a house band in a night club called the Roadhouse in Columbus Georgia
that held 3,000. We opened for Dr. Hook and and all the road bands coming
thru the area, usually after a Atlanta Show. The Bristol festival and
going back to the mountains I have wrote about 5 new instrumental gypsy
jazz kinda stuff. They are complex and I have gtr parts as well. So
watch for a upcoming acoustic cd as well as another Jones Ave. cd, Maybe
even DVD as Dennis is talking about. My friend Bobby Love from the Holston
Mountain Boys(Poplar Bristol Group) are going to collaborate on some
songs we wrote in Saudi Arabia. I will be spending alot of time in Bristol
Virginia in the coming months, and the chance to make some music up
there is exciting. Bobby is a master mandolin and guitarist and really
keeps me on my toes as a musician. his band is great and tight. Bristol
is the Home of Country Music and where it all began w/ the Carters,Stonemans
and Jimmy Rogers. My Grandfather Fiddler Charles Kendrick Fowler (1910-1978)
was a great musician, he had a jazz band in the 40's and 50's playing
swing Jazz, In the fourm I will put a recording of him in 1950 at the
Fort Know Army Base in the NCO club busting some cool jazz. My grandfathers
friend was Clayton Mcmichen he was Jimmy Roger's fiddle player and i
used to watch them play fiddle when I was very small.Bristol is a interesting
place and they have a giant wall w/ Jimmy Rogers on it.Check out this

Birthplace of Country Music -
The Bristol Music Story
In 1998 the United States Congress passed a resolution recognizing Bristol,
Tennessee, as the "Birthplace of County Music." This project
traces the history of how Bristol came to earn the title, beginning
with the region's southern Appalachian settlers in the 1700s who brought
with them, in old-world ballads and songs, the music of their native
Scottish Highlands. Although shielded by geography from outside influences
during the 18th and early 19th centuries, the area's music began to
evolve rapidly during the Civil War period when the region was opened
by the railroads. Touring vaudeville, minstrel and medicine-show troupes,
and the railroad workers themselves, with a variety of work songs reflecting
their African heritage, brought rapid changes to the settlers' original
music. The native fiddle of the English, Scotch, and Irish settlers
was joined by the banjo of African origin. After WWI, the guitar, autoharp,
and dulcimer were introduced into the mix.
Following Edison's invention of the phonograph in the early years of
the century, the the new recording industry experienced rapid growth
during the 1920s. Ralph Peer began to realize there was an uptapped
market for rural mountain music, and he set about to discover and develop
the area's musical talent. Musicians and singers originally traveled
to New York to record their music, but when remote recording became
possible, Bristol became Peer's initial hub of operations in 1927 --
chosen because of the proximity of local musicians such as Ernest and
Hattie Stoneman, the Johnson Brothers, and Henry Whitter. Soon talent
from other southern states, including West Virginia, Virginia (the Carter
Family) and North Carolina (Jimmie Rodgers) was recorded by Peer. These
early recording sessions, called the "Bristol Sessions," would
mark the birth of country music. Their influence can be seen in bluegrass
of musicians such as Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, in the song-writing
of Hank Williams and Woody Guthrie, in the guitar-playing of Roy Acuff
and Chet Atkins, in the sound of Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Johnny Cash
and Bob Dylan, and in the song-stylings of Hank Snow, Ernest Tubb, Merle
Travis, Merle Haggard, Dwight Yoakum and Dolly Parton. The report follows
the growth of popularity of country music during the "barn dance"
shows of the radio era and bluegrass festivals of the 60s and 70s. In
the mid-1990s, the Birthplace of Country Music Alliance (BCMA) was founded
in Bristol to call attention to and support the musical traditions of
the area.
The project is documented with a 22-page report on the "Bristol
Music Story," brief biographies of the Carter Family, Jimmie Rodgers,
the Stonemans, a log of recordings in the "Bristol Sessions,"
25 historic photographs with descriptions, and a videotape "Bristol
- Birthplace of Country Music."
I really enjoyed
the Bristol Experience that mountain culture is hard to beat.
The Fountain City as alot of fun we got a late start but played a long
show. Dennis had set up his multi-media experience which was pretty
neat, He has a awesome strobe. Dennis adds alot to the electric show
w/ his guitar playing as well as the bass. Dr. David Wisdo is playing
bass, keys and gtrs and Bob auto-harp,acoustic bass and gtr, as well
as my therimin, mandolin and guitar. Not to mention we have fiddles and
dulcimers, and every other instrument you can thank of. The Fountain
city show set list included. 1. Fat Angel,Pretty as You Feel,Broken
by the World,Saviours,Cosmic Grin,Treadmill,Idiots Vision, Bitter Cherry(a
15 minute Jam version)Married in Ga, and Hurting for People. We had
a small crowd but they had alot of fun. We appreciate all who came out
very much we thank you and i hope you enjoyed it. The show is very dark
sounding at this juncture and Cullman will be perfect for that. I love
the 3 part Harmony of Dennis,Bob and Dr. Dave are developing. Come out
on Oct 1st at Fountain City. We plan to a all acoustic set(Dr. Dave-Fowler)
and play some songs entirely in Gaelic as well as Lindisfarne,Fairport,Strawbs
covers as well as album cuts from Idiots Vision and Folk Art. All cd's
are available at www.sfblue.co.uk

There you have it. P.S. I have been asked many questions on what SUPERCZAR
is doing. Right now we are taking a break and everybody is busy. Jones
Ave.,Superczar and San Francisco Blue have been my musical "Trinity"
for the past 10 years SFB first recording was in 1995 called "One
By One" the original version never made the album. The original
track had the singer changed from Rebbecca Richardson who sang the original
to Sandra Okeefe in California, also about 20 seconds was edited off
the middle personally I liked the Original version the most. San Francisco
Blue was formed when me and Bob began writing together in 1995. We met
in Al Jubail Saudi Arabia in 1990 we played music together but didn't
write. Jones AVe. was formed in 1997 by Brian Fowler,Gabe Holland(Superczar,Jones,SFB)
and John Joiner(Jones,SFB). John Joiner has played most of the live
SFB and Jones Ave. shows, his departure was a spiritual blow to Jones
Ave.Jones Ave. was a old house John Joiner lived in and it burnt halfway
down, so half the house was in plastic and unliveable. The center room
was hulled and black, we placed gargoyles around the room and John had
a old piano and I played mandolin. On Folk Art the Title song Jones
Ave. was written by John and was the theme song. John left Jones Ave.
in 2003. Dr. David Joined Jones Ave in 1999 and has fronted the band
ever since. Josh Railey(Superczar,Jones Ave.) arrived in 2002 and has
been the drummer ever since. Dennis Beck joined the fold in 2004. Jones
Ave. the show goes on. Superczar has 4 studio albums in 7 years as well
as 3 compilations on Shuteye Records and A Movie Sound Track "Chaos
god and Sun Monster" Gabe Holland has appeared on every album available
now as well as a solo album called "Gabe" 1992. I have written
more songs w/ Gabe than anybody on earth and the next step for SUPERCZAR
we have to discuss. Superczar members "Pop Tart" and J.W.
Culp(SFB,Jones,Superczar) are busy at the moment as well. J.W. is a
professor like Dr. David Wisdo" at the University and Pop is playing
w/ Nik Turner and SPACESEED at the moment. Pop Tart will be playing
drums on Treadmill at Cullman w/ Jones Ave. We just finished a new album
called "The Misadventures of Stanley Howard" in June 2004.
If you havent heard that album or the other Superczar Albums Pop Art,6
